FAQ's and Gym Policies

Sick/Injury and Registering

Please download the Mindbody app and link to Brian Beaury Jiu Jitsu (iOS or Android).

Register for class in advance if you can! It helps us know who’s coming and who to message in case of class cancellations.

Check into class on the iPad at the desk upon entering the gym.

  • If you are ill or feeling unwell, do not come to class. You will be sent home

IF YOU HAVE A SKIN INFECTION OR OPEN WOUND, YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ATTEND CLASS.

We do not want to spread to other students. Also, you’re more likely to get an infection if you have an open wound. If you have any questions, ask us before coming to class.

If you have a question about a cut or suspect an infection, feel free to ask Brian about it BUT we recommend you check with your medical provider for advice.

Uniform (Gi or Rash Guard)

If it’s your first class: shorts and a tee shirt are fine- we have some spare gi’s at the gym you can borrow during your free trial.

  • For Gi classes, you must wear a clean gi top and bottom and your belt. You must wear a shirt under your gi
  • For No-gi classes, you must wear a rash guard and shorts. If you are wearing leggings, shorts must be worn over them.
  • For muay thai, kickboxing, and MMA class you can wear fitness apparel.

We do have gi’s and rash guards available to purchase at the gym, but you can also buy online.

No shoes are allowed on the mats

  • If you are going to the restroom, you MUST put shoes on before entering. We do not want to track germs from the bathroom back to the mats.
  • Sanitization stations- there are blue buckets with foot disinfectant surrounding the mats. Feel free to use those before walking on the mat

  • Jewelry is not allowed when in class. It is a hazard to you and other students.

WASH YOUR UNIFORMS (YES, INCLUDING YOUR BELT)

Always wash your gi, rash guard, and workout clothes after EVERY SINGLE class—the quicker you wash it the less likely it is to start smelling rank and having body odor smells cling to it. You are not allowed to wear dirty gi’s to class. Belts must also be washed (the “magic” will not be washed away if you wash it, we assure you)

To Wash

Follow each manufacturer’s instructions, but we typically recommend washing with cold water, with other jiu jitsu clothing (so smells do not transfer to your regular clothing)

Do this at you own discretion – We occasionally wash with 1 cup of white vinegar mixed in with the detergent, and then sprinkle baking soda on the gis to lift smells and whiten.

Hygiene and Cleanliness Policies

You MUST wash your gi after every class. This helps keep the gym clean and protects you and your teammates. If your gi is dirty, you will be asked to leave class. See washing guidelines under “Uniform/Gear”

Clip and file your nails so you don’t scratch your training partners

Do not to wear strong fragrance to classes as it may agitate others

On that same note, please be sure to wear deodorant – you will sweat a lot during class and no one wants to roll with someone with body odor

Changing, Lost & Found and Restrooms

We have changing areas, please do not change in the middle of the gym

We have cubbies to store your items during class. Store items at your own risk, we are not responsible for any lost, stolen or damaged items.

Please do not leave your shoes in the middle of the aisles – we have a shoe rack, and we need to keep the aisles clear.

Lost and Found: Located at the gym. We periodically throw out items in the lost and found. If you do not pick up your items we are not responsible for items that are thrown away. If you know you forgot something at the gym, let us know and we’ll set it aside for you.

If you need to use the restroom during class, you MUST wear shoes into the bathroom.

During Class & Rolling

We highly recommend for beginners to roll at a light to medium intensity to avoid injuring themselves or training partners.

Always let your partner and instructor know if you have an injury or limitation/restriction.

If you have questions during rolling, please feel free to ask your partner, or ask the instructor.

Slams, heel hooks, and other techniques specified by your instructor are not allowed for white belts for safety reasons.

  • If you have any questions any time during class, let the instructor know

  • LINING UP: We start class by lining up by belt rank:

    • Black (by the head instructor)
    • Brown
    • Purple
    • Blue
    • White (closest to door); students new to jiu jitsu all sit

Various techniques will be taught during the beginning of class. THIS IS DRILLING AND TECHNIQUE and is intentionally taught at a slower rate and resistance level so you can get reps in. You are not there to hurt your partner, you’re there to learn the technique and help each other learn.

  • Your instructor will pair you up with another student during this portion of the class
  • You can move around when the instructor is explain a technique to get a better view

The later portion of class includes live rounds, which is called rolling.

  • Be aware that everyone in the gym has different abilities and goals. If you have never rolled with someone, start at a slower pace.
  • Let your partner know if you have any injuries
  • You will find various students to roll with during this portion of class. A higher belt may call on you to roll. You can also ask for rolls. You are allowed to decline a roll.
    • Watch your space! Jiu Jitsu gravity means everyone ends up rolling near the same area—make sure to be conscious of where you are to avoid colliding with others
  • If groups of people are rolling near the same area of the mats, the space goes to the highest ranking belt. Lower belts must move to a different area on the mat
  • Your instructor may tell you what position to start from (from the guard, ground etc), or It may be open rolls (where you decide)
  • Tapping – Tapping means STOP ROLLING. If you feel a tap or hear them say “Tap” immediately stop and reset. If you are in a position where you feel discomfort, tap! We want to prevent injury during class
